This year, Coalcliff SLSC will be staging two marquee events, the new Dave Winner Lifeguard Challenge at 11.15am, and the Dave Winner Beach to Bombie Swim at 12.00pm.

Both events will have full surf lifesaving water safety provided by Coalcliff SLSC.

The Lifeguard Challenge – 11.15am

The Dave Winner Lifeguard Challenge sees lifeguard teams from Sydney Northern Beaches, Waverley, Randwick, Sutherland Shire, Wollongong and Shellharbour councils compete over a 1.5 kilometre ocean swim course to claim the prize of champion lifeguard team. Professional ocean lifeguards are the elite of surf lifesavers, and this new event will showcase some of Australia’s finest ocean athletes as they fight it out to win bragging rights for the next 12 months. The current reigning champions are Sutherland Shire council lifeguards, who were led to victory last year by Dave Winner’s son, Steve.

Entry includes a swim cap, insurance, and timing bracelet.

Entry fee is $25.00 plus $1.99 ticket agency fee.  Ticket proceeds go to Coalcliff SLSC.

The Beach to Bombie Swim – 12.00pm

The Dave Winner Beach to Bombie Swim is a popular swim open to the general public over a course of approximately 1.5 kilometres. This event has been run by Coalcliff SLSC for 15 years. This race invites both competitive and recreational ocean swimmers to enjoy this unique swim in one of Australia’s most beautiful locations.

There will be food and drinks available to purchase on the day.

Join Dave for lunch after the swim at the Coledale RSL

Competitors, family and friends are invited to join Dave and the crew for lunch at Coledale RSL after the event, with one of Dave’s best mates, Pete Jordan, belting out some of Dave’s favourite tunes.

Dave Winner’s inspiring story of survival

Dave Winner survived a near drowning and significant spinal injury while surfing at Coalcliff beach in mid-2021 and the accident has left him with partial quadriplegia. Knocked unconscious and submerged underwater for more than three minutes, Dave’s life hung in the balance. Thanks to the swift actions of bystanders and their proficiency in CPR, Dave was rescued and airlifted to safety.

One of the first responders who applied CPR to Dave had, it turned out, been trained by Dave in CPR himself. And ironically, during his many years as Coalcliff SLSC’s Chief Instructor, Dave always said, “One day, the life that you save, may be mine!”.

Dave has been inspired by his experience to establish the Dave Winner Foundation to help save lives through his quest to see one million Australians receive free training in CPR. If you would like to learn more about the Dave Winner Foundation, get free CPR training or make a donation, go to the website Dave Winner Foundation – Saving Lives, One Beat at a Time
