Notice from Wollongong Council

Notice from Wollongong Council regarding upcoming projects at Coalcliff Beach. The first project involves improvements to Coalcliff Rock Pool. The second project involves repairs to the sea wall near Stoney Creek. Both projects are scheduled to commence in May 2017.

As you may be aware, Council engaged with the Stanwell Park and Coalcliff communities last year to seek input on how monies held in the Stanwell Park Rock Pool Reserve Fund should be spent. Residents were asked to rank nine possible options, in order of preference. The top three ranked options were:

Building a concrete path across the rock shelf to the Coalcliff Rock Pool, extending the footpath network at Stanwell Park public reserve, and improving the drainage on the concrete platform above Coalcliff Rock Pool.

Council is now proceeding with the above improvements, beginning with the Coalcliff Rock Pool refurbishments. In addition to the works mentioned in points 1 and 3 above, we will be making a number of other improvements to the rock pool, including structural repairs to the eastern seawall, concrete surface repair of the concourse, building new concrete steps into the pool (north and south), and constructing a new shade structure on the existing shower slab, including slab retaining wall works to improve drainage.

These refurbishments will be funded in part by the Stanwell Park Rock Pool Reserve Fund, with the remainder of the cost covered by Council. The works will take place between the hours of 7.00 am to 6.00 pm Monday-Friday, and 8.00 am to 1.00 pm on Saturdays. For the duration of the works, there will be no public access to the rock pool. It is anticipated that the refurbishments will be completed by the end of Spring, in time for the start of the peak swimming season. Access to Leeder Park, the children’s playground and the toilet block will not be affected. The temporary loading zone on Paterson Road will be used for unloading of materials to the worksite, but at all other times will be retained for parking as usual.

Council is also planning to begin the next stage of repairs to the sea wall at Coalcliff Beach. Stage 1 was completed in 2016 and involved repairing the section of sea wall in front of the Surf Life Saving Club. This next stage of repairs will be to the section of sea wall closest to Stoney Creek.

A works compound will be set up adjacent to the Club and fencing will be erected around the work site.

During construction hours (generally 7.00 am - 3.00 pm, Monday - Friday), there will be no unauthorised vehicular access along the section of road running from the carpark down to the Club; however pedestrian access will be permitted. While the ramp to the beach (in front of the shed) will be closed, pedestrians will have access to the beach via the pathway that runs to the north of the ramp, which will be temporarily upgraded to improve public safety.
