Dr Rip’s Science of the Surf
‘Dr Rip’ is Dr Rob Brander, a surf scientist from the University of New South Wales and a Stanwell Park local. Rob has been studying beaches and rip currents for over 25 years and gained his nickname for his habit of putting harmless purple dye in rip currents for demonstrations. His community education program ‘The Science of the Surf’ has been presented to over 40,000 adults, primary and high school students throughout NSW and has received several State and Federal Safer Community Awards. His YouTube video ‘How to Survive Beach Rip Currents’ has over 1.1 million views and in 2011 he was awarded a prestigious Australian Government Eureka Science Prize for Promoting Understanding of Scientific Research. Rob is also the author of the best selling book ‘Dr Rip’s Essential Beach Book; everything you need to know about surf, sand and rips’
Information about the Talk for Newsletters etc.
The Science of the Surf is a fascinating, entertaining and multiple award winning visual multi-media presentation about how our beaches work and behave; from the journey of tiny little sand grains onto your favourite beach, to the massive swell that rolls in during big storms, to how to spot a deadly rip current - this talk is for anyone who loves and is interested in the beach. It also has a beach safety theme throughout. The talk goes for approximately an hour with questions and is for all ages, but is best suited for ages 8+. If conditions permit, a release of harmless purple dye will be made into a rip outside the venue. Bring your cameras!
Signed copies of the bestseller ‘Dr Rip’s Essential Beach Book’ will be available for purchase for $30. This fun and simple guide is packed with photos and fascinating facts and stories that will help you get the most of your next visit to the beach. What people have said about the book:
